A trip down memory lane

We don't do Valentine's Day. That's pretty much a given.

But I did get cards on that day for several years from that very special someone, who's been with me from primary school to higher education and from childhood to adulthood.

I was doing a bit of spring cleaning and transferring all the stuff I've accummulated over the years when I came upon my treasure trove of old scribbled notes and various celebratory cards - my cherished collection of mementos from the past.

As I went through the pile, smiling and near to tears at the same time, I re-disovered this gem: a red card with heart-shaped flowers on the cover, which proclaimed that "Life is Lovelier with a FRIEND Like You".

And inside this heartfelt message:

I say, I can't believe we have been in the same class for almost five years... five years stuck seeing each other every morning (shudder)... anyway, it has been five wonderful years knowing you as a true friend. And I hope we'll stay friends till the end.
O.k. before I embarrass myself or make a fool of both of us, just remember that...
I have a phone and two ears and a heart. So as a "friend", make use of them, 'kay?
That's it for this year.
More loves,
Intan (call me when you need me!)

I don't think I'd be the same person I am today if I hadn't had Intan as a friend. And if I were asked to recall the best things about secondary school, I'd think about her and Hjh Amalina and Siti Zulaikha and Amir, my bestest of best buds.

We're all living our separate lives now. We no longer share classes, homeworks or teachers. No more people-watching or afternoons spent playing ping-pong.

But one thing remains.

We each have a phone, two ears and a heart. When that call comes, I'll be sure to be there for them when they need me.

Because I know they'll do the same for me.
